Have you just discovered that you need glasses in order to correct your vision? This is not a pleasant experience for anybody. If given the choice, everyone would much rather have perfect vision and not have to worry about buying and using optical products in order to help them to see properly. Unfortunately, that is just not the way the cookie crumbles! Some people will have near-perfect vision for all of their lives. Others will need the help of optical devices at some stage. If you fall into the latter category, then you will need to consider what sort of product will best suit your needs. When people think about poor vision, they normally think about using glasses to correct the vision. However, this is not the only product that is available! There is a great alternative to glasses contact lenses. You have no doubt heard of contact lenses before, but how much do you really know?
The lowdown on contact lenses
Contact lenses are a fairly recent invention, having only been a mainstream consumer product for a few decades. Prior to their invention, glasses were the only decent optical product available to those with poor vision there was really no choice in the matter! Regardless of how uncomfortable or inconvenient glasses were, those with poor vision simply had to put up with them if they wanted to see better. The invention of contact lenses changed all of that. People with vision problems no longer had to deal with the problems that glasses presented. Glasses are notoriously uncomfortable, and cause headaches in many people. Also, glasses tend to be very fragile and can break easily, causing people to buy expensive replacements. Conversely, contact lenses are comfortable and durable. No more pinched noses, no more smashed glass just comfort and convenience!
Getting a prescription
If you have decided that you want to try contact lenses, you will need to get a prescription, just as with glasses. Make an appointment to see your optician, and they will be able to take care of this for you. Your optician will run a series of tests in order to work out what is the best type of contact lens to prescribe for you. You might need to read off an eye chart, or sit for testing on a computer screen. Your optician might also use special testing machines to gauge your vision problems. When all of this is done, then your optician will be able to give you a prescription. Contact lenses are very specific, and you will need to be prescribed the correct type in order for them to work in the way they are meant to. Your optician will work out the best brand and type for your particular needs, and will write the prescription for you to fill at the pharmacy. Make sure you are clear when you tell your optician what you are looking for the last thing you want is a miscommunication that results in you getting the wrong type of contact lens for your needs.
Filling your prescription
You can get your prescription filled at almost any pharmacy. It is very important that you take your prescription with you when you pick up your contact lenses, even if this is not your first batch. You should never rely on memory either yours or your pharmacists to have your contact lenses filled. This is the easiest way to make a costly and inconvenient mistake that leads to you having the wrong type of lens. If you make sure to have your prescription on hand EVERY time you go to the pharmacy, there is much less chance of this happening. When the pharmacist has filled your prescription, you should check it before you leave. Make sure that the brand and the type is exactly the same as what your optician has written. If there are any other points listed on the prescription, make sure that these are the same too. If you are given the wrong type of contact lens, this can cause havoc with your vision you might not be able to see properly, and you might be unable to work or study until you fix the mistake. So, make sure you check what you are given to avoid this!
When you decide to get contact lenses, you need to make sure that you take the time to go through the process of getting a proper prescription and having it filled properly. Contact lenses are serious optical tools, and need to be treated as such. This is why they are available as a prescription to ensure that they are used properly and that people are getting the products that they need to improve their vision.
