Have you recently discovered that, due to vision problems, you need optical help? Or are you looking to upgrade from your old reading glasses to something more convenient? If either of these situations sound like you, then you will probably be looking at getting contact lenses. Contact lenses are much more fashionable and convenient that traditional reading glasses, and because of this they have taken over a huge chunk of the optical products market. More and more people are choosing to use contact lenses on a daily basis, rather than bothering with the hassle of uncomfortable reading glasses. Contact lenses are definitely here to stay!
Where do you start?
If you have never used contact lenses before, you might be a bit overwhelmed as to what type of contact lens you need. But dont panic! It is not as hard as you might think to make the switch to contact lenses. The first thing you need to do is what you are already doing research! Read as much as you can about contact lenses (this site is a great resource) so that you know exactly what you are looking at. There is a big world of types and brands of contact lenses out there, and it will help you to know the basics of what is out there. Armed with knowledge, it will be so much easier for you to tackle the task of getting contact lenses.
Getting your prescription
The next stop will be your optician in order to get a prescription. Your optician will be able to tell you exactly what type of contact lens you need. They will thoroughly test your eyes in a variety of different ways to determine what the problem with your vision is. These days the type of eye tests that are available to you are very advanced, and they do a very precise job of identifying vision problems. Once you have completed this testing, your optician will discuss with you your test results and your needs when it comes to optical products. For example, someone who needs to have good vision all day in their work will have different needs than someone who does not. Once you and your optician have worked out exactly what your needs are, they will write you a prescription for a certain type of contact lens. Your optician will know the subtle differences between types and brands, so you should trust that they know the best contact lens to prescribe for you. If you are unsure at all, now is the time to bring it up with your optician let them know if you think you actually need a different type, and they will be able to discuss your concerns with you there and then. It is much easier to do this now than after the prescription has been filled.
Having the prescription filled
Once you have your prescription, you can head off to the pharmacy to have it filled. It is important that you always take a copy of your prescription with you to the pharmacy when you are picking up your contact lenses, even if you are a regular there. It can be easy to get mixed up between types and brands of contact lenses, and if either you or the pharmacist gets it wrong because there is no prescription to go off, it could be very inconvenient for you. Once the pharmacist has filled your prescription, you should check it before you leave. There are several points that you need to look for when you are checking. Make sure that the pharmacist has given you the exact brand (not a substitute) and that the package has the right lens name. You should also check that the power (sphere, cylinder and axis), the diameter, the base curve and the peripheral curve match your prescription exactly. If you do not check, you might later find that there are subtle differences between your prescription and what you have ended up with and these could play havoc with your vision.
If you follow these points, you should find that switching to contact lenses is very easy. Contact lenses can be much more comfortable and convenient than reading glasses, and many people could not imagine switching back! As long as you are careful when you are getting contact lenses prescribed and filled, you should not find them to be a hassle in the least. In fact, they could change your life for the better! Many people find that reading glasses are very uncomfortable, not to mention very fragile. Replacing lost or broken glasses can be very expensive, whereas contact lenses rarely present such a problem. Having poor vision does not mean that you have to have a poor lifestyle, so try switching to contact lenses and find out how much of a difference they can make!
