As a parent, we always want what is best for our children. We try to give them the best care that we can, and provide them with all of the tools that they need to turn from children into adults. So, what do you do if you find that your child has poor vision? This is not such a big deal as you might think when you initially hear the news. It might inhibit your child a little, but if you are wise about the way you approach the problem, it should not affect your childs life too much. Poor vision is not as debilitating as it has been in the past. In years gone by, someone with poor vision might have been restricted from many activities and occupations and there was little that they could do about the problem. These days, technological advances have made it much easier for people to correct their vision problems, or cover them up with short term solutions.
The facts about contact lenses
One of these short term solutions is the use of contact lenses. Previously, glasses, or spectacles, were the product of choice for people to use on a day-to-day basis. However, glasses are not always the most convenient way to help poor vision. Glasses can be uncomfortable, and pinch the nose and head. They are also fragile, and can break very easily or become lost. People have often complained about how glasses look, that they block the face too much and are not aesthetically pleasing. Contact lenses were invented to solve all of these problems. Contact lenses are much more comfortable than glasses, as they sit only over the eye, and not over other parts of the face. Because contact lenses sit underneath the eyelid, there is little chance of losing them as you might with glasses, which are taken on and off throughout the day. Contact lenses are invisible when they are inserted, meaning that they do not interfere with the look of someone's face.
How contact lenses can benefit your child
So, if you have found that your child has vision problems, you should consider contact lenses to help solve these problems. Your child will likely appreciate not having to wear glasses to school. You will probably remember the teasing that children with glasses received when you were at school, so you would not want this for your child. If they are wearing contact lenses, it is likely that other children will not even notice, and your child can continue with their life as they did previously. If you were to ask your child, you would likely find that this is something that they definitely desire. Psychologically, the years that children spend at primary school are crucial in their development. While it is desirable for children to develop a "thick-skin" when it comes to teasing and name-calling, the sort of self esteem problems that can stem from continual teasing or bullying can be very damaging. Children will naturally tease other children, and this sort of normal interaction should be enough experience for your child to develop that "thick-skin". The added pressure of being a child who wears glasses is something that is not necessarily going to help your child when they are at school.
Getting a prescription
There are many different brands and types of contact lenses out there, and there are certain contact lenses that are best for children. This is something you will need to talk to your optician about. Your optician will make an appointment for you and your child so that tests can be carried out. These tests will determine exactly what sort of vision problems that your child has, and what the extent of those problems are. The results of the vision testing that your optician carries out will give them a better idea of what sort of contact lenses your child needs. Your optician will use the test results and then prescribe a contact lens that will make your child's vision much better. You then use this prescription to pick up the contact lenses from the pharmacy. When you pick up the contact lenses, it is a good idea to check that what you receive is exactly what was prescribed, to ensure that there are no nasty surprises with the wrong type of contact lens.
If you find that your child has poor vision, it is definitely not the end of the world! There is no reason why, given the right tools, your child can not live a completely normal life. If you provide your child with contact lenses, not only will this correct their problems, making it much easier for them to complete tasks such as school work, it will also have less effect on their life. After all, making your child's life comfortable is one of your main goals as a parent, and contact lenses will help you to achieve this.
